From this interface, PDF reports of simulation results can be generated via a simple workflow. The same portlets will work in the e-infrastructure Sakai VRE.

A series of JSR 168 portlets have been developed for the MoSeS portal, which uses the GridSphere framework. MoSeS offers users a number of different ways to interact with its simulations and scenarios. MoSeS links into services such as the census for current and historical demographic information and the EDINA geo-linking service for mapping data on different regions such as electoral districts known as wards. To make predictions, computationally-intensive agent-based simulation models are run on the NGS using a number of distributed data sources. MoSeS helps town planners to forecast trends in healthcare, business and transport in policy making by predicting demographic changes looking forward up to 20 years. Modelling and Simulation for e-Social Science (MoSeS) is another NCeSS node, this time focusing on development of a national demographic model and simulation of the UK population specified at the level of individuals and households. Robert Allan, in Virtual Research Environments, 2009 Modelling and Simulation for e-Social Science For this reason the focus in the material that follows is on descriptions and examples from these disciplines. Historically, most of what we now call modeling and simulation was done in the fields of applied science, particularly civil, mechanical, and aeronautical engineering. However, in this article the broader meanings, as discussed in the preceding paragraphs, are used. Mathematical analysis has implied doing pencil-and-paper derivations and solutions. Modeling is viewed as recent jargon that should be reserved for specific tasks that might occur as part of analysis. For many technical professionals, analysis means a broad exercise of classical skills in mathematics and physics to predict behaviors of physical systems. The role of engineering analysis with respect to simulation and modeling can lead to semantic misunderstandings. In most of the following material, the latter meanings will be recognized, but a clear distinction will be made between the two words, with simulation conveying the action of imitating reality and model representing the vehicle. Another viewpoint is that the term modeling includes both the construction of models and the manipulations of these models (the simulations). For example, an alternate interpretation of simulation is the act of using a computer to generate a solution for a problem that otherwise could not be solved by traditional mathematics. Also, in some branches of engineering and science the terms simulation and modeling have taken on alternate meanings. Hence, it is not surprising to find differences of opinion on how they should be used and interpreted.
Obviously, the two words lead to overlapping interpretations. Simulation, on the other hand, has come to mean the act of presenting an appearance of (or interaction with) something without the reality. However, for others it may mean a person who displays clothing for a photographer, or it may mean simply an example (e.g., person) to be imitated. Traditionally in technology the word model used as a noun has meant the representation, or facsimile, of something-often a physical object. The words model and simulation have taken on different meanings for different groups of people.
